Plastic is Poison I was extremely disappointed in the plastic bottle and water article last week [ Cover story, Aug. 12: “H2 Woe” ] and saw it as yet another example of scientific illiteracy in the popular media (Zane’s comments about Wi-Fi a bit ago were another).

Case study 1 presents a premenopausal woman with schizophrenia, who received an 8 week trial of daily adjunctive 200 g transdermal oestradiol. Case study 2 presents a postmenopausal woman with schizophrenia on a 12 week trial of adjunctive raloxifene hydrochloride 120 mg per day-1. Case study 3 presents a woman with schizoaffectiv e disorder, in the manic phase, who received tamoxifen 40 mg per day-1 for 28 days.

[Arch Womens Ment Health. 2002 Nov;5(3):99-10 4.]: The addition of 100??g adjunctive transdermal oestrogen significantly enhanced treatment responsivity of acute, severe psychotic symptoms in women with schizophrenia. The positive impact of oestrogen treatment on psychotic symptoms via a multiplicity of possible actions (see accompanying articles in this issue) may prove clinically useful in the overall treatment of women with schizophrenia.
- Estrogen in Severe Mental Illness: A Potential New Treatment Approach [Arch Gen Psychiatry. 2008 Aug;65(8):955- 60.]: The addition of 100 g of transdermal estradiol significantly reduced positive (P < .05) and general psychopatholog ical (P < .05) symptoms during the 28-day trial period compared with women receiving antipsychotic medication alone.
