Cocaine Defined

A stimulant made from the leaves of a South American coca plant. It comes as a paste added to tobacco; as a powder (cocaine hydrochloride) inhaled through the nose or injected when mixed with water; purified (freebase) by mixing cocaine powder with ether, baking soda or other solvents to remove everything but the pure cocaine; or as crack--freebase made into ready-to-smoke rocks

  • Molecular Mechanism of Cocaine High Revealed: Scientific American: cocaine triggers the reward pathway by activating the mesolimbic dopamine system--a series of neurons that originate near the base of the brain and project signals to its front. Their first stop en route is a section known as the striatum, where the signals are first received. These signals inhibit the release of the neurotransmitt er glutamate and increase the amount of the neurotransmitt er dopamine by blocking the latter's normal reabsorption into the synapses that released it. Taking a closer look at this process, Wang and his colleagues examined the brains of rats after they had been injected with the drug. They found that in the striatum the dopamine receptors known as D2 interfered with the normal function of some glutamate receptors--kno wn as NR2B--by blocking their activation.
  • Cocaine Addiction Linked to Differences in Brain Structure: Scientific American: amygdala was between 13 and 23 percent smaller by volume in addicts than it was in the control subjects. ?In combination with other work this study suggests that, when the opportunity for excitement presents itself, some people cannot make good judgements. It remains unclear whether cocaine use induces changes to the brain's structure or if a smaller amygdala might make a person more susceptible to cocaine addiction.

  • WAR ON DRUGS: Mexican President Felipe Calderon Moves to Decriminalize Drug Possession: Faced with a mounting death toll in his war with powerful drug trafficking organizations, Mexico President Felipe Calderon has moved to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs, according to a Reuters report Thursday afternoon. The only other source reporting the news Thursday evening was the Mexican news agency Notimex. Under the new law, you can carry 2 grams of pot, 2 grams of opium, half a gram of coke, 50mg of heroin, or 40mg of meth. "What we are seeking is to not treat an addict as a criminal, but rather as a sick person and give them psychological and medical treatment,&quo t; said Sen. Alejandro Gonzalez, head of the Senate's justice committee. Nice to see some sanity south of the border, even if it has taken thousands of violent deaths (3000 -- a "septembe r eleventh unit" -- this week alone) to achieve said sanity. The last bill like this was stopped - by another country. Guess who? "US" ?
