  • LexisNexis® Academic: Markets evolving for oil sands bitumen, synthetic crude: TO ACCESS PAGE COPY AND PASTE THE FOLLOWING IN QUERY BOX, "Markets evolving for oil sands bitumen, synthetic crude." This article notes the different types of bitumen. Many markets around the world are thinking about increasing or starting oilsands purchases. "The 2007 US Energy Independence and Security Act appears to restrict use of oil sands crudes by federal agencies that includes the US military. "Alternat ive or synthetic fuels including fuel produced from non-convention al petroleum resources" ; are restricted if the life cycle GHG emissions exceed those from using conventional fuels...Produc tion of oil sands is energy intensive. Canada and Alberta also are moving to reduce GHGs long-term. Bitumen produced by in situ methods requires fuel for steam. Oil sands mining and extraction requires fuel for steam and power. Upgrading requires fuel and hydrogen feedstock.&quo t;

  • New process extracts pure hydrogen from contaminant in unrefined oil: Commercial-sca le process to extract and reuse pure hydrogen from the hydrogen sulfide -a natural contaminant of unrefined oil, including oil sands, is one step closer to reality thanks to a collaboration between Argonne National Laboratory and Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc. (KPM) of Kingston, Ontario. Argonne and KPM researchers have invented a molten copper reactor, an innovative process technology that is more energy-efficie nt than existing methods. Moreover, the pure hydrogen gas stream that it extracts can be used to upgrade and clean crude oil and petroleum products and aid in a number of refining processes. In the reactor, hydrogen sulfide gas is first separated from the crude oil stock, using technology already in place. This gas is then bubbled though molten copper, which releases pure hydrogen. The hydrogen is then captured for use as a valued product. As the sulfur reacts with the copper, the copper is gradually turned into copper sulfide.
